Variable Linear SUITABLE FOR USE WITH THE ANTELOPE ZODIAC, POP PULSE T170, KINGREX UC192, AND T20 SERIES, SONOS RANGE, SQUEEZEBOX DEVICES, ETC . . . Yes, this is a mass-produced, off-the-shelf laboratory bench power supply, not a svelte audio trinket. It's no oil painting. That's why it's so much cheaper than 'bespoke, audiophile' offerings. Shut it in a cabinet. However, we have auditioned our way through a number of candidates over a long period to arrive at this recommendation: we believe it's the best performing, best value, tool for the job. It's well engineered where it matters, with a large, high quality toroidal and sophisticated regulators. It also runs silent, with passive cooling via heatsinks on the rear – most supplies of this type deploy one or more fans in this role which create undesirable acoustic and electrical noise. With a typical ripple figure quoted at just 0.25mV this is one of the cleanest linear supplies we've tried. With high quality DC leads it's capable of radically transforming 18V DACs like the Yamaha Steinberg MR816 or Antelope Zodiac (if your budget can't stretch to the superior Voltikus supply), cleaning up a SPDIF converter like the UC192 (which likes 7.5V) or 5V Squeezebox products, or giving your Tripath amps some get up and go – or even if you fancy an upgrade to the Audioengine A2. Variable output all the way to 30V makes this extremely versatile for a wide variety of modest-draw devices (total capacity: 2.5A). If you can find a place to hide it, it's a great-sounding bargain. |
