Audiophile-Grade DC Power Cables Given the number of audiophile-grade 12V devices available, it's frustrating that so few good DC power cables exist. Basically, you're stuck with the cheap patch lead that (sometimes) comes free with the PSU, or . . . well, another cheap patch lead from Maplins. That isn't free. What if you need a longer lead? What if you want a better cable? What if you want to use a KingRex or Item Audio linear PSU with a Wadia iTransport or other device with a non-standard connector? Now you can . . . Item Audio offers its own, made-to-order, fully screened, high quality DC leads of any length, terminated with the best connectors available, in any configuration to suit your connection requirements: 2.1mm, 2.3mm, MiniDin (for Wadia Docks), XLR, etc. All leads come with ferrite beads to protect your power supply from device interference, and can optionally be cryo-treated. We also felt it was important to offer this service without snake-oil claims or massively inflated prices. They will make a subtle improvement to the sound of your system, and they are a big step up from the free lead in terms of shielding, robustness and durability thanks to some simple, common-sense high-quality parts specification and careful fabrication. Cryo-treatment of any power or signal component always brings gains, too. They will not cost you an arm and a leg, starting at just £15. And shipping is free worldwide. DC Socket Compatibility Guide: For Musical Fidelity V-DAC: 1.3mm DC input For KingRex Power Supply Unit (PSU): specify 2.1mm output USER TESTIMONIALS: “I don't wholly like to say this but your [DC] power lead makes a difference, and it's not at all subtle . . . it's all to do with the stereo image (depth and 'substance') and the focus on and believability of individual instruments and performers.
If you don't already include this lead in one of your upgrades, I think you should.
So I'll be keeping it!
Both these leads have been well worth the expenditure.” – David R AC Power Cables How can the last metre of cable really make a difference to the sound quality, when you considering the lengthy and haphazard journey those electrons make from the power station? Good question: but it does. The trouble is that AC power cables are among the worst value in hi-fi: for the same price as practically any 'high-end' cable you can install a new dedicated spur for each component a via a new consumer unit – and this will do more for your listening pleasure than any overpriced power lead. Alternatively, it's very simple to make your own: keep connections clean and few, use sturdy connectors and effective shielding, and if you're feeling specially diligent, send it for cryo-treatment. But, if for whatever reason, you fancy a quick and easy upgrade without getting your hands dirty, LAT's highly rated AC-2 is easy to recommend, and available in lengths up to 4m. |
