If you're even know what a screwdriver is, these fully assembled Tripath boards represent incredible value for money. You can buy cheaper versions, but you can't buy better than these carefully selected pre-assembled PCBs that have already been tuned and specified for great out of the box performance, with audiophile grade parts. The TK2050 is from Sure Electronics and outputs a genuinely muscular and musical 50W with trademark sparkling high frequencies, pure midrange and meaty bass. The smaller TA2020 and TA2024 boards are developed by Arjen Helder in China, who is making a name for himself as the leading exponent of low end Tripath modifications. Click pictures for details.

All these boards come with RCA inputs and screw terminals for speaker cable. It's possible to connect a DAC and output cable and control volume digitally from your PC: no soldering involved. In fact, some say they sound best run as 'power amps' in this way. Or you can replace the tinned phono inputs, wire up some binding posts, add a potentiometer or attenuator, fit the lot in a fancy case and pretend you're an amplifier designer. You could even run a pair in dual 'mono' configuration, or use the boards as a basis for your own further modifications: see web for details. Because they come with 12V DC inputs, you can plug-and-play a range of commercial power supplies, or case up one of these Meanwell switching PSUs . . .

The choice of power supply is crucial. Meanwell switch mode power supplies in ventilated cases are an ideal, cost-effective solution for the higher powered TK-2050 boards. Alternatively, any of the KingRex 12V power supplies are suitable for the TA2020 and TA2024 products. The TK2050 will run on a 12V/3A supply, but some may find the lower frequencies lacking in weight, and a smaller soundstage will be produced . . . these qualities may even be advantageous for near-field listening!
