Pop Pulse TA2024
Tripath Amplifier

Both in pictures and in reality, the latest giant-slaying T-amp marvel to emerge from the far-East resembles the highly regarded Trends TA 10.1. However, its manufacturers claim to have surpassed its performance to set a new benchmark in miniature low-cost amplification – if not product naming.

Based on the ubiquitous TA2024 chip, special attention has been paid to shielding and isolation, complemented by a Dale resistor, German ERO's at input and Elna Silmic at the PSU. Gold-plated, insulated terminals provide robust and durable connection for one line level input and speakers out.

As with any Tripath amplifier, the sound delivered will depend very largely on the power source used: the TP10 comes with a stock substantial switching transformer that accepts 100-240V AC and converts to 12V / 5A. However, the amp is capable of much higher performance powered by batteries or the superb KingRex PSU. In both cases, the background is deadened, bass is greatly improved and the soundstage deepens and broadens significantly.

The low price creates exciting possibilities: use three or even five in an AV rig at much less than the cost of a fully active system. Combine it with a low cost DAC, monitor speakers and a 99p USB lead for a highly musical desktop system that brings all the attributes of proper hi-fi at a fraction of the cost and size. Or pair it with an upgraded power supply and a DIY full range speaker (plus a 99p USB lead from your PC) and be astounded by the hi-fi fireworks a £250 system can deliver!
