AudioEngine A2 Stereophile doesn't often get het up about a cheap audio product, but these cute little active speakers are special. Measuring just 150mm x 100mm, they pack in a 70mm Kevlar mid/bass unit, sweet 20mm silk dome tweeter and a 15W amplifier together capable of plumbing 65Hz. The similarity to Quad L's doesn't end with the driver specification: they also have an amazingly musical sense of drive and presence for their size. If you've ever been dismayed by the abysmal noise made by typical sub/sat powered desktop systems, you'll be delighted by the AudioEngine range. If you're looking for the most extreme example of maximum sonic impact in a tiny (portable) package, you'll stun your friends with the A2s: you will not believe how much sound erupts from such a tiny cabinet. Front ported to enable placement close to a bass-reinforcing rear wall, the A2 strikes a sensible mid-point between high resolution and easy listening: they always sound detailed, but never 'etched' enough at the top end to make long-term near-field listening fatiguing. Though they excel at presenting music on the desktop with nothing more than a twin phono input, it's amazing to hear their potential when placed on sturdy stands, with space to breathe, and given a chance to perform with a good DAC and interconnects. Their groundbreaking performance has earned them What HiFi?\s 'Best Budget Desktop Speakers' garland, Personal Media Review's 'Best Stationary iPod Sound System' plaudit and Enjoy the Music's 'Great Audiophile Gift' award. We think you can't have more fun legally for £130. Very highly recommended. With regard to partnering, there are many ways to build a great little system around the A2s: the little SuperPro DAC bundle is the perfect way to dip a toe in the water of computer audio. Getting them off the desk on our bespoke stands really liberates their potential: forget the wedges! And bassheads will be relieved to hear that the A2s dovetail perfectly with the Adam Sub 7 Subwoofer. BUNDLE OFFERS: TURNKEY SYSTEMS: “For the space-, style- and price-conscious audiophile, the A2’s seem to have few, if any, peers.” – Aaron Marshall "Mated with an excellent sound source, the Audioengine A2 loudspeakers should produce many hours of musical pleasures without the pitfalls of sounding like the usual mainstream small plastic junk or apparent distortion boxes on the shelf at from your local electronics store." – Enjoy the Music "(Audioengine) doesn't market the A2 as an iPod-specific sound system, but it works beautifully that way. At one-third the size of the $349 Audioengine A5, these compact speakers still sound so full you'll be looking around for a secret subwoofer under the desk. – Personal Media Review "For speakers in this class, the A2s sound exceptional. Warm, punchy, articulate and well integrated. In short, the A2s are a revelation at the price." – Stuff TV "These *are* the best speakers for your desktop, notebook computer, or media player." – Connect Reviews "I have never been more impressed with or more stunned by a component I've reviewed for Stereophile than I was with the Audioengine 2. The level of sound quality produced by this uncolored, detailed, articulate, and dynamic speaker, in all situations, was beyond reproach, and its ratio of value to cost borders on the criminal." – Stereophile "The Audioengine A2 is the best PC speaker I've ever heard. The luscious, uncolored midrange is too wonderful. If you use your PC to listen to any amount of music, get the Audioengine A2s. Do it now. – GoodSound |
